Iron Memorial Fund

I took to the road again in April 2011...
The Iron Memorial ride was a relatively modest expedition. No camping, corn beef or bears and without my trusty sidekick Alain I felt a bit like the Lone Ranger without Tonto.
I rode with my dad, brother and two other gentlemen, David and James to raise money to erect a memorial to commemorate the memory of the eleven British soldiers and the French citizen executed by the Germans in Guise on 25 February 1915, as well as the village who sheltered them.
Valuable support was provided by Janet who appeared with lavish quantities of quiche at strategic points.
The memorial has now been erected in the village of Iron, Aisne where the soliders were concealed from the Germans for about 5 months until their discovery and execution.
It is a story of daring, intrique and tragedy, according to my dad. He is an avid first world war historian so possibly this is not the most objective assessment.

The Place des Armes during the War. It was from here that Waechter, Kolera and two lorries full of troops departed for Iron to arrest the British soldiers in hiding. The pedestal carried the statue of Camille Desmoulins. He was guillotined by Robespierre during The Terror. The statue has been dismantled presumably by the occupying German forces.

The ride through Normandy took us through dairy country. The soft furnishings in one of the hotels we stayed in had a strong cow theme.
